Justin Welby Archbishop of Canterbury

You will have seen or heard the news that Archbishop Justin has resigned following a report into abuse in Christian Camps by John Smyth a Church of England Reader. The report showed that Archbishop Justin and others knew about the abuse and did not do sufficient to prevent it continuing, failing to act on the reports of Smyth’s behaviour.

Bishop Michael, Bishop of Bath and Wells says:

‘The Makin Report into the Church’s handling of allegations of serious abuse by the late John Smyth is deeply shocking and disturbing. My heart is with everyone who experienced the appalling abuse described. I recognise the weight of what they endured and the immense courage they displayed in coming forward. The details revealed in the report highlight issues that cannot be ignored.’

As a Benefice we take seriously our safeguarding responsibilities and have adopted the Church of England’s safeguarding procedures and guidelines.

If you have felt affected by issues raised in the report you can speak to Safe Spaces, a free and independent support service, providing a confidential, personal and safe space for anyone impacted by church related abuse safespacesenglandandwales.org.uk, 0300 303 1056). Alternatively you can contact a member of the Diocese of Bath and Wells Safeguarding Team. or get in touch with Ben Goodhind, Safeguarding Manager. Tel: 01749 588917 Email: ben.goodhind@bathwells.anglican.org

In this Benefice our Safeguarding officer is Rose Persson, please do approach her or Jane Durham if you wish to discuss anything.

We are encouraged to continue to pray for all those whose lives have been affected by the abuse of Smyth and others.
